New Road into
Chico Mendes Reforestation Project
The community of Pachaj in the department of Quetzeltenango is the home of the Chico Mendes Reforestation Project. Volcano Santa Maria (almost 13,000 feet in the background to the right) can be viewed from this mountain ringed community.
The mountains that surround Pachaj are the source of potable drinking water. In order to maintain this valuable resource the trees of the forest have to be maintained. A group of Oberlin students gather rich forest soil which will be used to plant and grow tree seedlings that will be transplanted in the mountains surrounding Pachaj.
